Michael Wollaeger's Noir series represents a process of selection, appropriation, photography and manipulation. Scanning the approximately 130,000 frames of a typical Noir movie from the 1940s and 1950s, recorded from cable television transmissions, Wollaeger selects one frame, a mere fraction of a second embedded in the hour-and-a-half film. He then photographs that image on the television screen and manipulates it through cropping. contract and other interventions. The result are images that capture the dark essence of Film Noir while removing those nearly subliminal images from the familiar context of any given film. Unlike a film still, which seeks to project the identity of the film, with recognizable stars and iconic moments, Wollaeger's images are meant to evoke the dark world of Film Noir in a more elusive and suggestive way, creating their own mysterious narratives.
